The SpokenWeb Project and the Sound Studies Institute at the University of Alberta invite proposals from accomplished Sound Artists for a four-week residency and two-week exhibition to be held in Edmonton, Canada from April 1 – May 12, 2023.
We are seeking proposals from local, national, or international artists engaged with sound and sound-related media to develop new work that has not been previously exhibited or performed. Experimental approaches and those that challenge the affordances of sound media are encouraged. The resulting exhibition may also feature multimedia components including complementary print and visual forms of expression.
The exhibition will be planned for May 1-12, concurrent with the 2023 SpokenWeb Symposium and Summer Institute to be held in Edmonton, Alberta. The theme for the 2023 Symposium is “Reverb: Echo-Locations of Sound and Space.”
During the period of project development, April 1-30, the successful applicant may be in residence in Edmonton or elsewhere, but will need to be on location and available for the exhibition setup, launch, and takedown periods.
One Artist in Residence Fellowship valued at $5,000 is available. Additionally, we are prepared to allocate up to $1,000 in authorized material costs and up to $2,000 in eligible travel and accommodation expenses.
Artists developing their project on location may arrange for access to the Sound Studies Institute’s space and technology, including its media lab, recording studio, and editing studio. Where possible, we will also seek to provide technical support, server space, and other resources.

How to Apply: To apply, please submit: 1) 500-word Proposal summarizing your project, including its physical description and installation requirements, and demonstrating its feasibility within the proposed timeline; 2) 250-word Personal Statement stating what motivates you to undertake this project at this point in time and how your ideas intersect with the conference themes; 3) 2-page professional CV (including a link to your website/portfolio showcasing at least 3 relevant projects).

The SSHRC-funded SpokenWeb partnership aims to develop coordinated and collaborative approaches to literary historical study, digital development, and critical and pedagogical engagement with diverse collections of literary sound recordings from across Canada and beyond. We are a group of researchers, archivists, and artists who are dedicated to the discovery and preservation of sonic artifacts that have captured literary events of the past to activate these artifacts in the present.
