Program description

This fellowship aims to engage an emerging scholar in the fields of literary studies and/or oral history to pursue research that applies oral historical methodologies to the study of audio archives of literary performance, as part of the SpokenWeb SSHRC PG research program’s “Oral Literary History” axis, directed by Drs. Jason Camlot and Steven High.  Based within the Department of English at Concordia University, and in affiliation with interdisciplinary platforms of collaborative research—the Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling (COHDS), The AMPLab for Literature and Sound Studies, and the SpokenWeb research network—the fellow will contribute to the development of oral historical methods for the study of literary performance in Canada since the 1960s.

Making use of extensive infrastructure available at Concordia for the study of sound, literature and oral history, the Fellow will:

1. lead development of innovative approaches for the application of oral history methods to the study of literary sound recordings
2. develop an oral history protocol for oral history axis of the SpokenWeb research program
3. develop oral history workshops and training modules for researchers in the SpokenWeb network
4. conduct and process oral history interviews with literary practitioners and historical agents discernible in the archive (including managing permissions and post-production)
5. theorize literary performance in light of oral histories, study historical interviews and conversations found in the archive, and iteratively reflect on the implications of the methods experimented with for literary historical analysis. 
6. develop papers and articles based upon the work described above.

Academic qualifications required

The Postdoctoral Fellow will have a PhD in Modern/Contemporary Canadian Literature and/or Oral History, or in a cognate field relevant to the PDF research program description, and a record of publication demonstrating active engagement in research. S/he will have an interest in the exploration and development of oral historical research methods relevant to the study of literature and literary performance. S/he will have knowledge of the digital tools relevant to the production and processing of oral history interviews within digital environments. S/he will have an interest in pursuing collaborative research and in developing leadership skills within a large interdisciplinary research network. Knowledge of French is an asset.

Eligibility requirements

• Applicants must not currently hold a postdoctoral appointment at Concordia 
• Priority will be given to postdoctoral fellows who have obtained their PhD from another university although in exceptional cases Concordia graduates may be considered
• Applicants must adhere to the postdoctoral fellow eligibility criteria outlined in Concordia University’s Postdoctoral Policy
