These positions are for a SpokenWeb-affiliated project entitled “Literary Radio: Developing New Methods of Audio Research.” While this project is different from the official SpokenWeb project, Research Assistants will have the possibility of participating in SpokenWeb programming and related activities.
Position Context and Project Description (2 RA positions)
Dr. Katherine McLeod received a SSHRC Insight Development Grant, “Literary Radio: Developing New Methods of Audio Research,” and this grant will be funding two graduate students at Concordia University.
Applicants should have a strong interest in and knowledge of contemporary literature and an interest in one of the following: archives, publishing, media, performance, audiovisual recordings, and/or podcasting. Experience in web design and/or audio production will be beneficial for this position.
Candidates should be independent, self-motivated, organized, and responsible. The work will be supervised by Dr. McLeod. Monthly meetings held virtually or in-person on campus.
Responsibilities and Skills Development
The main tasks of the RA work for this contract will consist of:
- Prepare bibliographic materials for a scholarly publication
- Compile metadata related to recordings of poets on radio in Canada
- Contribute to the early stages of building a webspace for representing research findings (experience with web design is ideal for this type of work)
Additional tasks that may be undertaken, based on the interest of the RA and in collaboration with the supervisor:
- Learn about archival methods for working with literary audio archives held by major cultural institutions (CBC and Library and Archives Canada) and the cultural production that produced and preserved these recordings (as relevant to the project and/or to your own research).
- Develop methods for data management, searchable metadata, and visual representation of data sets about radio broadcasts of poetry in Canada.
- Collaborate with Concordia’s team of SpokenWeb to generate ideas for how their metadata schema (already in development) could include radio archives.
- Conduct and/or edit oral history interviews as part of a podcast episode for The SpokenWeb Podcast
- Reflection and documentation on the research and develop a public-facing presentation (i.e. conference paper).
Salary & Eligibility
Position open to any graduate student (MA or PhD) in good standing. Rate to be determined by the Collective Agreement for 5 hours per week.
